EYDFA Optical Amplifier: High-Power Boost Solution for CATV, xPON & FTTH Networks

Premlink’s EYDFA has the greatest available power (up to 43dBm) and the ability to grow for the most difficult fiber network expansions. Designed to work well in CATV, FTTx, and extended-range situations.

What is EYDFA? (Erbium Ytterbium Doped Fiber Amplifier)

EYDFA is based on the EDFA structure and includes a Ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier module, which is used to boost the fiber signal to a more intensive optical network. EYDFA is primarily used in high power optical amplifiers with a total output power ranging from 25 to 42dBm (or higher). EDFA’s output power is <25dBm. Essentially speaking, EYDFA is a high power EDFA.

Here is a direct comparison between the standard EDFA and the high-power EYDFA to show the main differences:

Features Standard EDFA High Power EYDFA
Technical Definition
Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier
Erbium-Ytterbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier
Total Output Power Range
Typically < 25 dBm
Typically 25 to 42 dBm (or higher)
Core Working Principle
Uses Erbium ions for signal amplification.
Uses a Ytterbium-doped fiber module to absorb pump light and transfer energy to Erbium ions, enabling significantly higher power conversion
Doping Elements
Erbium (Er)
Erbium (Er) and Ytterbium (Yb)
Pump Laser Type
Single-mode
Single-mode + Multimode
Primary Application
Metro networks, medium/short-haul links, standard FTTx nodes.
Large-scale CATV distribution, long-distance FTTH feeds, high-split-ratio PON networks, backbone segments requiring ultra-high power

In summary, the main improvement of EYDFA is its built-in Ytterbium module with multimode pump laser, which breaks the power limit of standard EDFAs. This makes it the best choice for increasing network capacity and reach.

PL2000x Series High-Power EYDFA: Capabilities & Features

PL2000x has low noise and high linearity performance to meet the most stringent CATV and FTTx application requirements. It offers a flexible and low-cost solution for wide-area distribution networks. The PL2000x is the first unit in the CATV industry that comes with a touchscreen LCD and back reflection function*.

High Output Power & Flexible Multi-Port Distribution

Based on the optical power included 25~40dBm before splitter. It is available to make special modifications to a specified output power up to 43dBm before splitter. This optical amplifier has built-in optical power splitter for providing up to 128 output ports. The standard is at 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 output power port(s).

Three Control Modes for More Precision Stabilization

APC (Automatic Power Control): Output Optical Power Level Stabilization
ACC (Automatic Current Control): Pump Current Level Stabilization
AGC (Automatic Gain Control): Optical Gain Level Stabilization

Built-In Monitoring & Back Reflection Measurement

Equipped with standard measures of input power and back reflection optical power, and as well as reflected power meter within a wide dynamic range. Measurement of back reflection is a useful function to monitor networks and to configure optimal settings for exploitation.

Optional Optical Switch & xPON Pass Through

Equipped with an automatic redundant input port, as per customer request. The optical power level at each of the two input ports is measured independently, enabling instant switching from the primary input port to the backup input port. Additionally, it is also available with GPON and XGS-PON pass-through for PON networks.

Web & SNMP Management for Centralized Control

All PL2000x series optical amplifiers have a built-in web server, which can be accessed by any widely used web browser. Controlling and monitoring of the amplifier is done through the menu of interactive web pages. On-demand monitoring of the amplifier can also be accessed through our SNMP Manager.

Excellent Mechanical Design for 24/7 Operation

All is in a standard 2U (1U and 3U), 19″, equipped with 3 reliable cooling fans operating in parallel with microprocessor overheating protection. It is capable of working with temperatures up to 50°C, and, if necessary, up to 65°C is optional. The standard power operates on AC 90~264V with high efficiency and high reliability.

EYDFA Block Diagrams for CATV, xPON & Optical Switch

PL2000x has CATV, xPON, and Optical switch enabled versions for different applications. The CATV version is a regular traditional EDFA. xPON is for GPON pass-through and/or for GPON & XGSPON pass-through. The Optical switch has two optical inputs. When one fails, the other one can be automatically switched on.

Output Power Configuration: On-Site & Remote Adjustment

Output power can be adjusted to a higher or lower value in order to achieve optimal conditions in the appropriate environment. There are methods available to adjust the output power ports for all Premlink EYDFA devices. The adjustable range is extensive, allowing each EYDFA unit to be modified to a 10dBm output per port, regardless of its previous output power of 15 or 20dBm per port.

We have the capability to configure a new output power in AMP mode –> APC –> by inputting the desired output power on-site. This process is quick and easy.Additionally, we can connect to the RJ45 port on the Local LAN or access the web browser via the internet. The default IP address is 192.168.1.1. By clicking on “Amplifier setup” and selecting “APC” mode, you can modify the output power as needed.
